Trek Fuel EX5
The Trek Fuel EX5 was heavily revised for 2010 with a frame that was only found last year on much more expensive models. Featuring the key Trek technologies of Active Braking Pivot, Full Floater and EVO link, the frame is a fantastic platform for anyone on a budget looking for an all-round mountain bike.
And it's not just us that think that. BikeRadar.com recently had one on test and were very impressed with the overall package. You can read the review here.

Retailing in Australia at just $2,299, it is at the lower end of the Fuel EX range, but it offers superb performance from the frame and will out perform bikes selling for much, much more!

Thanks for the comment Greg. Glad to hear you are out enjoying the fantastic Fuel EX5.
As you said, the rider of these bikes is a very important part of the equation! All of the Fuel EX range are excellent at handling almost anything a MTB trail can throw at it.
For the extra dollars that the EX8 costs you do get some performance upgrades. The EX8 has an E2 headtube and fork steerer that helps to stiffen up the front end of the bike for more precise steering. It also has a Fox DRCV shock which effectively gives you 2 shocks in one, combining great pedaling efficiency with awesome big-hit control. It also has a lighter frame and components, which helps to keep the overall weight down. For 2011 the EX8 also has a 10-speed Shimano drivetrain, giving you a wider range of gears for tackling the hills.
So, yes the EX5 is an excellent all-round dual suspension bike for tackling the trails, but the extra money for the EX8 does get you some significant improvements.
Enjoy the trails!

I bought the 2011 model of this bike. I love the glossy black with white and blue. I was thinking of getting the ex8 which is more expensive and I am glad that I went with the ex5. This bike is simply amazing for its price. It climbs and descends like a mountain goat! I have a new found confidence riding this bike and I am doing things that I couldn't do before with my previous FSB. A couple of guys that I ride with have the ex8 and my ex5 can do whatever the ex8 can handle, with my new found confidence I can even handle some technical stuff that the guys with the ex8 can't do! I guess it's all about the rider. If you are thinking of getting one of the higher ex models, give the ex5 a look before spending more money with the higher models because the ex5 can do whatever the higher ex models can do for less money.
